Bishopthorpe Parish Council
Village Wide Consultation on the future of Field 84
Field 84 is the first field after the Bosuns Restaurant and Campsite heading along the river
towards the old railway bridge.
It is currently leased to the owners of the campsite until 2029 and brings in an income of £1,800 to
the Parish Council. Under terms of the lease:
∙The field may be used by members of the public for picnics and recreational activities;
∙The pedestrian access from the rear of the property must be kept open at all times;
∙Open views of the river and riverbank are to be maintained at all times;
∙The Tenant must keep the site tidy and maintain Public Liability Insurance to the value of
£5m.
However, the owners of the campsite have recently offered to purchase Field 84 for £50,000 as
they wish to utilise the open space for ad hoc events.
Coincidently the Parish Council are aware that the:
∙The toilets in both the Village Hall and Vernon House, after extensive use, will need
updating in the near future.
∙The equipment in Keble Park Play Area is now over 15 years old and significant parts will
need replacement over the next few years.
If the sale goes ahead, it would allow work to commence on the above issues without the need to
increase the Parish Precept (paid as part of your Council Tax) over the next few years.
However, we have been approached by a group of local residents asking us to retain Field 84 in
Parish Council ownership on the understanding that they will organise a volunteering rota to
maintain the site for public use.
If this proposal were adopted, the Parish Council would lose the income from leasing and would
have to maintain £5m Public Liability Insurance cover for the site.
We are looking for your help to decide upon the future of Field 84.
